Review

“I found the attack on physics to be pretty compelling ... Lanza's theories [are] certainly worth debate.”— Houston Chronicle's Eric Berger, SciGuy blog “What makes this book both interesting and worth the effort of reading it; is the unique perspective Lanza brings to the subject matter as a physician. ... From the way [Lanza] chooses to present his arguments, it's clear he has a solid grasp of esoteric disciplines like quantum theory, special relativity and particle physics. And what makes his presentation more compelling than other efforts I've encountered is his ability and willingness to weave personal experience into the thoughts and ideas presented. His style is conversational and warm which tends to pull you along through the exposition gently. And his sense of wonder and befuddlement at shop worn enigmas like the double slit experiment, Bell's theorem, non-locality and Schrödinger's cat is as infectious as it is delightful ... I very much like what Lanza has to say in Biocentrism.”— Midwest Book Review Endorsements for Robert Lanza’s essay on which Biocentrism is based: “For several days now I have read and reread your article and thought about it. Like ‘a brief history of time’ it is indeed stimulating and brings biology into the whole. Any short statement does not do justice to such a scholarly work. Almost every society of mankind has explained the mystery of our surroundings and being by invoking a god or group of gods. Scientists work to acquire objective answers from the infinity of space or the inner machinery of the atom. Lanza proposes a biocentrist theory which ascribes the answer to the observer rather than the observed. The work is a scholarly consideration of science and philosophy that brings biology into the central role in unifying the whole. The book will appeal to an audience of many different disciplines because it is a new way of looking at the old problem of our existence. Most importantly, it makes you think.”—E. Donnall Thomas Thomas was awarded the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington and Director Emeritus of the Clinical Research Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. “It is genuinely an exciting piece of work. I am very familiar with some of the things you say. The idea that consciousness creates reality has quantum support, as you suggest, and also coheres with some of the things biology and neuroscience are telling us about the structures of our being. To put what you are doing in a larger context, it exhibits a dramatic new Copernican reversal. Just as we now know that the sun doesn’t really move but we do (we are the active agents), so you are suggesting that we are the entities that give meaning to the particular configuration of all possible outcomes we call reality. I think this is a great project.”—Ronald Green Green is the Eunice and Julian Cohen Professor for the Study of Ethics and Human Values, and Director of Dartmouth College’s Ethics Institute. Professor Green is a well-known religious studies scholar and former Chairman of the Department of Religion “Robert Lanza, a world renowned scientist who has spanned many fields from drug delivery to stem cells to preventing animal extinction, and clearly one of the most brilliant minds of our times, has done it again. ‘A New Theory of the Universe’ takes into account all the knowledge we have gained over the last few centuries, and correlates them to our own beings, placing in perspective our biologic limitations that have impeded our understanding of greater truths surrounding our existence and the universe around us. This new theory is certain to revolutionize our concepts of the laws of nature for centuries to come.”—Anthony Atala Atala is an internationally recognized scientist, and the W.H. Boyce Professor, Chair, and Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. “As an astrophysicist, I focus my attention on objects that are very large and very far away, ignoring the whole issue of consciousness as a critical part of the Universe. Reading Robert Lanza’s work is a wake-up call to all of us that even on the grandest scale we still depend on our minds to experience reality. Issues of “quantum weirdness” do have a place in the macroscopic world. Time and space do depend on perception. We can go about our daily lives and continue to study the physical Universe as if it exists as an objective reality (because the probabilities allow that degree of confidence), but we do so with a better awareness of an underlying biological component, thanks to Dr. Lanza. I cannot speak for NASA or other NASA scientists, but personally I look forward to hearing a more detailed explanation of this biocentric view of the Universe from Dr. Lanza.”—David Thompson Thompson is an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. His contributions include the building and flying of prototypes of EGRET, which was launched by the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1991. He is currently with the Astroparticle Physics Laboratory, and has received both the Goddard Space Flight Center & NASA Group Exceptional Achievement Awards. “Yes, it is appropriate to ask whether our perception of space and time is a consequence of our particular neurophysiology. Yes, it is appropriate to ask how it happened that the conditions worked out to be just right for life to appear somehow on earth and then to evolve from the archaea through the eukaryotes to us. ... I’ll bet the book gets a good audience. And I like to see books published that challenge my own ideas and thoughts in ways that make me think, but not ones that simply throw dogma at me. The essay is definitely of the former kind.”—R. Stephen Berry Berry is James Franck Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Department of Chemistry, University of Chicago. Professor Berry is a member (and recent Home Secretary) of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. He was also former Vice President of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and MacArthur Prize “Genius” Fellow. “Science has a token of freedom that motivates scientists to study all logical possibilities that may explain the world. Robert Lanza has come up with an innovative approach to investigate reality from the viewpoint of biology. His article demands an answer to the question of whether scientists have exhausted all possible tools for studying nature. Can science bring biology into grand unified theory? A solution is suggested that involves a new concept, biocentrism. Lanza goes beyond the individual human attribute calling for interconnectedness among all living creatures forming the fundamental basis for understanding reality. A book that expands upon this unique approach is warranted, not only to alert society, but to call on it to test this novel new hypothesis.”—Gunther Kletetschka Kletetschka is a geophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. He is also a Research Professor of Physics at Catholic University of America and leading scientist working on the James Web Space Telescope. “It’s a masterpiece—truly a magnificent essay. Bob Lanza is to be congratulated for a fresh and highly erudite look at the question of how perception and consciousness shape reality and common experience. His monograph combines a deep understanding and broad insight into 20th century physics and modern biological science; in so doing, he forces a reappraisal of this hoary epistemological dilemma. Not all will agree with the proposition he advances, but most will find his writing eminently readable and his arguments both convincing and challenging. Bravo.”—Michael Lysaght Lysaght is Professor of Medical Science and Engineering at Brown University and Director of Brown’s Center for Biomedical Engineering.

I've thought about stuff like this my whole life. The world "out there" is just NOT what you think it is. The equipment you dream with when you sleep is the same stuff with which you experience your "life". Neither "experience" is "real". Sorry for all the quotation marks. What you know is not necessarily right. You do not exist the way you think you do. If you have read or are reading this book you have stumbled on to something very profound. The first chapter contains some of the most important ideas you will ever know. Read this book carefully.Mere words are not enough to describe just how...magnificent YOU are! There are some who will scoff at these ideas. Do your own research. Get "The Seth Material" by Jane Roberts for a simple explanation of how you are...put together. Some notable scientists have noted recently that we may exist in a simulation. Indeed we do! WE are the simulators! Other scientists say there is "Dark matter" and "Dark Energy". Of course there is! This is un-realized "stuff" that an "observer" hasn't been "aware" of! Once again forgive the quotes...mere words...Here is a mind bender: The Hubble Space Telescope can see "infant" galaxies so far away [13.5 billion light years] that they must have formed soon after the "Big Bang" This means the light from those objects is 13.5 billion years old. The "speed limit" for light is 186,000 miles per second. Mere matter CANNOT go that fast! HOW did those objects get so far away if they can't move at the speed of light? Are we looking at the back of our heads? Is the universe a circle ? Just where the heck are we anyway? What is light? What is matter? What is speed? What is distance? What is space? See? ALL of these IDEAS are YOURS! They exist nowhere else! YOUR ideas are unique. No one else has them! YOUR existence is yours alone!Water is not "wet". Our experience of it is "wet". Oxygen and Hydrogen are as dry as popcorn! There are many things like this. There is no time and there is no space...

This book is Something Special."Quantum physics for the seeker" is how I think of it.I've read a few books that impressed me over the years. This one, though, is different in that it combines 'two worlds'.I've tended toward a split psychology, I guess. I was naturally drawn to see the workings of things, mechanics, physics, logic. Yet always I wanted the deeper answers as to what it was all about. To the extent that I found those answers they were found in reading and experience that was almost the diametric opposite of the physical, logical world; "In the head" vs. measurable, touchable reality. Two different things.Maybe you've heard about someone's "When I first read the Bible" or "My first meditation" sort of experience. Well, this one is more powerful than that, in that it COMBINES the core questions of existence with 'scientific', that is, actual physical/experimental, proof.I have, indeed, read a good few 'spiritually-oriented' books. My experience with them has always been that once I put them down, I am again faced with the same humdrum daily 'existence' of house, work, tromping about in that same old body, etc; 'physical reality' reasserts itself, and it's easy to feel that those deeply felt Truths I read just the other day were nothing but dreams, and 'this' is 'reality'.Herein, you will be confronted with the limits of 'physical reality' in a way that you cannot avoid through the usual 'logic' of the modern mind. This is the result of SCIENCE, not speculation. Flip the switch, the light turns on. Push that lever, and the toilet flushes.Doctor Lanza is a research scientist in biology. Yet somehow from his youth he has maintained the ability to ask the Large Questions. In this book, he has lain out a framework for answering them, based upon scientifically-derived reality, rather than just another 'spiritual perspective'.I suppose by now you've seen at least one or two quotes about how amazing and bizarre the apparent implications of quantum physics are - Well, this drills down on them, and lays out the startling implications quite clearly. For me, the small cost of the book was easily justified by one chapter alone, where he talks about those experiments with particles going through two slits... Do you remember hearing about that? Matter is also a wave, right? Well, I thought I had 'heard about it', too, along with some over-enthusiastic interpretations (- as I thought at the time). He describes in sufficient (though not horribly technical) detail how those experiments were laid out, and what they showed. They showed MUCH more than just wave/particle duality!!He lays out an implied world-view that is as radically different from our current standard as one can imagine, and does so in an ineluctably logical fashion.Have a look in here, and get a real glimpse. I think it will tickle you in a very deep place. It did me.Thank you, Robert Lanza and Bob Berman, for bringing us 'happy few' into a truly New Paradigm. As you point out, it will probably take our society many long years before this becomes as well understood as the basic mechanics of Newton, but now we have truly begun. It's like that opening scene in "2001...".

I am currently reading the author's follow-up book to "Biocentrism"..."Beyond Biocentrism"...which has not yet been released to the public. So let me say that if you are not at all familiar with the weird world of quantum physics, I think you would be best off waiting a few weeks for the release of the author's 2nd book, "Beyond Biocentrism," and reading that book first. The author spends more time describing quantum weirdness in plain English in his second book than he does in the first book.If you already know a little bit about the quantum world...(you don't need to know a lot,) you will enjoy "Biocentrism." The author has a wonderful sense of humor which adds spice to the science. In fact one of the funniest things I have read in a long time is in this book. It has to do with the Ishihara Color Test. It completely cracked me up.There are a lot of books out there now related to this subject matter, and many of them are not worth your time...just authors cashing in on the latest theory of everything. But I am careful about choosing books. And Robert Lanza is a highly respected scientist specializing in the field of stem cell research, so I trust this guy. And Lanza is also quite frank in stating that much of his thinking on this subject is pure theory...not to be confused with scientific fact. The subject matter is not exactly new, but new ideas sometimes need to hang out there in the realm of possibilities for a while before they gather momentum. I remember first hearing about the beginnings of this theory from the writings of David Bohm, winner of the Nobel Prize in physics back in the 1970s; and here it is about fifty years later and it is beginning to catch intellectual fire. If you are willing to keep an open mind, "Biocentrism" will give you lots to think about. Like ... what happens when we die? Does our consciousness stop, or does it just keep going on? Enjoy.

Stepmonster begins with an interesting premise, culturally and historically step mothers are discriminated against, for which Wednesday Martin provides evidence. She identifies the age-old dynamic whereby the children are antagonistic towards the step mother and the father remains passive, unable to defuse this cycle. Evidence is provided by Wednesday, that statistically second marriages with step children, have an extremely high failure rate, as high as 70%. Whereby the remaining percentage of marriages with step children which survive statistically beyond a number of years remain together. Thus, Wednesday encourages prioritising the marriage to the children by the father. Logically this makes sense. After all what’s the point of re-marrying if not to make it work. She recommends stepmothers, based on studies, disengage from stepchildren to make them feel less conflicted and give undermining mothers less ammunition to use against them. She reiterates that stepfamilies should not and cannot emulate a ‘real’ biological nuclear family with mother, father and children.I do not doubt that this might help, as what is not discussed but this is clearly set to do, is to make the biological mother feel secure in her role as mother when the children are away from her and for the stepchildren not to have to show or demonstrate any familial emotions or feelings toward a stepmother. A stepmother should accept that the mother will be involved in her home. What makes me extremely uncomfortable in this is that the undertone of the book is that a stepmother should be submissive to the stepchildren and the mother in her own home. If she has a thought or feeling toward the child in regard to care or caring, she should stifle this as she is over-reaching in her role and will antagonise the mother. Thus, the main person in the dynamic whose behaviour needs modification is the stepmother which seems to bring Wednesday full circle. Whilst at the beginning of the book she is sympathetic and indeed, at times, believes the stepmother is much maligned, by the end of the book, it is at the end of the day, the stepmother whose behaviour needs to be modified.Clearly through Wednesday Martin’s books she believes she is a feminist and progressive, I can’t help but feel that Stepmonster reinforces societal acceptance that treating stepmothers as the villain in the piece is okay, that the mother’s rights supersede the stepmother’s, and the old-fashioned biological nuclear family is the optimal situation.Whilst stepmothers are not ‘supposed’ to have feelings or be active participants in the care of the children, legally they will be expected to fund and provide the child’s care day-to-day whilst in her home. If a stepmother were not to provide material or emotional support for a stepchild she would and is considered very harshly by society. Should the stepmother unfortunately pass away, she will also be socially expected, and legally required in many places, to leave money to the children. This dichotomy is not addressed in Wednesday’s book. It is touched upon at times but not addressed. The anthropological studies provided by Wednesday are set to reinforce the idea that genetically the nuclear biological family is more able to bond. Genetically humans are 99.5% the same so this premise is based on the 0.5% difference. Can 0.5% of genetic difference account for bonding or is this social and cultural effects within the study populations?Re-married fathers are described as passive and ineffectual in the dynamic of the antagonistic children in the book. What is not described in the dynamic of the passive father and the antagonistic children toward their stepmother, is that quite often there are court orders or mediation agreements beholding the father on care arrangements, which constrains his behaviour and puts the father in a very difficult position. This creates a situation of power for the children, especially as they become teenagers and are psychologically aware of the power they hold in the dynamic of the stepmother's household. Wednesday does identify this as a motivating factor but attributes it to the stepmother being a rival for the father’s time. What is less acknowledged is that the children may also be driven to misbehave and mistreat the stepmother to please the mother. Logically the children have more at stake in the household where they spend most of their time. If the mother has majority custody of the children and the children are aware of the mother’s unhappiness or anger at the stepmother, then the children are more likely to lash out at the stepmother. Wednesday acknowledges this as the mother not ‘giving her blessing’. This seems to be watering down the role of the mother in the antagonistic dynamic. The recommendation from Wednesday for stepmothers to disengage would, logically, help to somewhat defuse this situation and may make the stepmother’s life easier if she can tune out the negative behaviour, however it won’t remove or change the underlying dynamic.Overall, the book is an interesting read, but I did find myself concluding at the end of the book that it simply reinforced the idea of stepmothers being monsters whose own behaviour was responsible for their mistreatment by their stepchildren. That if only stepmothers could find the right balance, not over-reaching or too caring, and detachment, because it is not their right to be maternalistic or nurturing toward the child, they would have a better life.

This book is wonderful if you are in the midst of "stepmothering" and feel completely overwhelmed and defeated. Just knowing that there are other people out there, going through the same things is incredibly uplifting. The fact is, when you become a stepmother you have no idea how hard it will be. Everyone (including you) has different expectations of what your role as stepmother is supposed to look like. You will go through a season when you will feel HORRIBLE about yourself all the time. If that is where you are at, this book is for you. You won't find much empathy out there from your friends and family because "you knew what you were getting into" or your new family because "the kids come first". I can now confidently say that both of those perspectives is dead wrong. Does anyone really know what they are getting into when they get married? Try adding (often traumatized) children to the newlywed mix and see how easy it is. The best thing you can do for your children/stepchildren is to have a strong marriage. Their lives have been shattered enough already without enduring another divorce. I love this book because it helped me get on the path to healing. A huge part of this is going through a grief process and letting go of what you thought your marriage and family life would be like.I know some people think this book is too negative in it's portrayal of the role of stepmother but I think it is very realistic. My husband started it then stopped reading because it was "too depressing". LOL, that's the life a a step mom!

My husband thinks its ridiculous that I'm relying on a book so much - he doesn't get how wonderful it was to realize, upon reading this book, that what we're dealing with is normal; that my feelings are normal. Having those things validated made such a difference in my mindset. I'd spent so much time trying to be liked by my 19-year old stepdaughter and this book gave me the permission to let go of that. It's freeing, actually, to realize I don't need her to like me or love me - just treat me with respect. And in the same manner, I don't need to go overboard trying to achieve that love. This book gave me "permission" to be myself and to disengage. I had thought I was alone in my my feelings of isolation, failure, stress .... the fights with her over-indulgent father! But it's all normal. So we move forward and I have a new attitude, which makes all the difference, and is a direct effect of reading Stepmonster.UPDATE, July 2016:I actually end up re-reading parts of this book (specifically the section on disengaging and the chapter on adult stepchildren) on a regular basis. This book is a support system for me and I'm continuously grateful for it. Everytime I feel like I AM somehow an awful person and an evil stepmother, this book reminds me that I'm human and this type of situation is NORMAL. Thank you Wednesday Martin!

As a step mother without her own children this book was a life saver for me. I would continually try to bond with my 11 year old step daughter only to later find out she was telling vicious lies about me to her mother. Her mother would not ask my husband about it and instead she took him to court for full custody! Luckily the court was able to get the truth out of my step daughter and she finally admitted that she lied about me.I thought I was the only one out there having these issues and the nasty thoughts and resentment that I felt about being stabbed in the back by my stepdaughter. This book explained that no matter how hard I try there are cases where the kid is not going to like you because they feel loyal to their mother. So, I stopped trying and I am so much happier! I asked my husband to read this book and he said it was very eye opening. He was finally able to see that it wasn't my fault. He was always on my side but until he read the book I could tell that he thought I was doing something wrong.

The demand for equality is central to modern politics. But what exactly do we mean by equality? Does it threaten other important values? Is it a demand we should support or question?

This highly accessible book provides an engaging introduction to the concept of equality and to the debates, historical and contemporary, that surround it. It explains and critically considers how the demand for equality arises in different spheres.

In the political sphere, it explores the relationship between equality and democracy. In the economic and social spheres, it explores the ideal of meritocracy and more radical theories of egalitarian justice developed in the works of John Rawls and Ronald Dworkin. In the legal sphere, the book discusses the challenges that feminism and multiculturalism pose to conventional conceptions of equal citizenship.

It concludes with an examination of whether equality should go global, and by analyzing contemporary arguments for and against the continuing relevance of equality to the political life of affluent democracies. Throughout, the book considers the tensions internal to the demand for equality and between equality and other important values such as liberty and efficiency.

Drawing on political philosophy, sociology and the history of political thought, the book will be of interest to students and researchers in philosophy and the social sciences and anyone interested in the values that animate democratic political life.

Review
"A very clear and accessible introduction to debates about equality in contemporary mainstream Anglophone political theory ... It is a remarkable feat that White has managed to cover such an extensive literature in such a condensed format."
Community Development Journal

"This is the only book of its kind offering a thorough discussion of the value of equality in all its dimensions. I have no doubt that it will become a minor classic in a short time."
Paul Kelly, London School of Economics and Political Science

"This is a terrific book, carefully and accessibly written, covering a lot of material without oversimplifying. Just right for the series."
Harry Brighouse, University of Wisconsin

Review "Gol" (legends of Ansu)" is the first book that introduces us to themythical world of author J.W.Webb and what a crazy, fantastical, marvelous world it is! It is imaginative pulls no punches in drawingfrom almost every available literary element available. This is a rarenovel that I thought had almost everything, from heart pounding battlescenes, to romantic love scenes, to twisted (and I mean twisted) familyrelationships, magical/supernatural elements, danger... it's hard not to find something you like. There are dark secrets revealed throughout, and nothing is predictable or what you think will happen. Kept meturning the pages late into the night! One thing I'll say is that I wasimpressed with how well the author J.W.Webb wrote it, there were almostnone of the mistakes I frequently see in new writers (slow beginnings, adverb abuse in dialogue tags, telling v. showing, etc.). Mr Webb writes like a seasoned pro and I'm looking forward to the next book in thisseries. Highly recommend!! Laura - GoodreadsGol" by J.W.Webb was a different type of book for me as I'm not a hugefantasy reader, although I do enjoy the genre. I'd read and enjoyedanother novel of J.W.Webb's ("The Haven" - Check it out!) and when I saw this one as being appealing for fans of "Lord of the Rings" and "Gameof Thrones" - two sagas that I really like, I thought I'd give this atry and see how I liked it. That said, here are my thoughts: I likedthat it was fast paced and with plenty of action, especially for a longbook. It wasn't predictable at all... and it kept my attention the whole way through. I don't think I was able to stop reading the last 30% orso! There were many characters, and I had no real concept of theindividual personalities, looks, etc... I did appreciate theintelligent, multi-layered plot - it forces you to pay attention andthink -actively engage the story. So not some easy breezy fluff beachread. To my surprise I found myself really sucked into the story, somuch so that I shed a few tears and may have cursed a few charactersalong the way. Was satisfied with the ending, but not *happy* if thatmake sense. But it's okay... Overall an enjoyable read that I'drecommend to others, and I'm really glad I gave it a shalt. Will readmore from this author anytime Tabitha - GooodreadsA complex fantasy novel combines a young man's quest, a noblewoman's nightmare, and a long-slumbering demon.Ruled by the brutal Baron Eon, Barola is just one of the many unpleasantprovinces in the land of Gol ("Barola was corrupt--a wormrottenapple--and the other provinces rumoured to be worse.") The baronarranges a marriage of political importance for his daughter to Varentin Gallante ("a pompous turd," according to the baron's eldest son,Rosco), but the wedding will only take place if it is forced. Thebaron's daughter Lissane is not interested in Varentin. She has insteadbeen seen in town with Erun, a blacksmith's son and young man who delves into poetry and "witty songs." Though the two hope to one day escapetheir treacherous conditions, their plans are vague and result in ascene of torture and combat, and Erun is badly wounded. Far away, afigure named Ozmandeus "had just achieved the impossible. He hadcaptured the essence of the Demon, Ashmali." Surely such a feat spellstrouble, but to what extent? Progressing with the aid of magicalfigures, folklore-worthy locations, and plenty of violence ("brightblood spilled and congealed on the bearskin rugs"), the storyincorporates many well-known fantasy tropes. Weaving the storylines with capable skill, Webb (Haven, 2015, etc.) supplies many intriguingimpediments, from a cunning, albeit entrapped, "Water Element" calledAqueous to a predictably sinister figure named Black Torlock. Readerswill be eager to see just when, and how, it will all come together.Descriptions lean toward the obvious ("Erun felt a string of emotionswash through him: sadness, anger, excitement and fear, were but a few"), a predilection that increases the page count but does little for thecontent. Nevertheless, readers unperturbed by the writing style willfind a multifaceted, though manageable narrative. An appealing tale set in an enchanted realm offers blunt prose and vivid characters in constant motion. Kirkus ReviewsFor me, author voice is almost everything, and it will make or break anovel and my enjoyment of it. I need to hear originality and know thatthe author is not trying to sound or write like someone else, but istelling HIS story in a whole new way, whatever that story may be. I feel like I can smell a fake a mile away, and believe me I've read my fairshare of books from authors who are 'trying' to emulate better, moreaccomplished authors in their genre. What impressed me the most here was that I thought that Mr. Webb's writing style has the confidence anddelightful quirkiness of a much more seasoned pro... I know he's written another book, but this feels, reads, and presents like a master of hiscraft. The characters had that elusive 'flavor' that only comes whenthey are fully realized and fleshed out, something that is not easilydone, especially in a novel of this depth and magnitude of complexissues. A great read, and will be looking for the next one from him.Recommend for older teens through adults. Sherri - GoodreadsThere were so many things I loved about this book, I hardly know where to begin. First, I loved the cover. And those amazing illustrations are done by Tolkien's illustrator? Wow, that is so incredible! Second, I love the way J.W. Webb writes characters and especially dialogue and action scenes. I really feel like I am inside the story, as a part of it, instead of being on the outside looking in and having a story "told" to me. Mr. Webb's vivid descriptions and lyrical prose creates a beautiful portrait and a frightening, mystical world that one can get lost in for hours and hours. This books seriously has everything good--action, fantasy, romance, good and evil, magic, ...I wish this series could be made into a movie, although it probably wouldn't be as good as the book anyways. But I thought the plot was highly creative, even for a fantasy, and wasn't just a re-telling of the same overused plot devices we always see. Although I had to a few times, I truly didn't want to stop reading until I'd finished. And I had some tears at the end! Ready for the next ones by J.W. Webb. Claire - Gooodreads

From the Author Gol comprises books 1&2 of the Legends of Ansu. Its content opens the doors on this new fantasy series featuring bespoke sketches throughout by Tolkien artist, Roger Garland. Gol is a passionate tale of love, hate, destiny and vengeance, power and the corruption that follows it. It's helter-skelter pace brims with gritty action and conflict. Within Gol's fast turning pages three dimensional characters struggle for dominance, pawns playing on an intricate tapestry-board of myth and all-consuming magic. Gol tells of a continent threatened by fire and water, and time. A land where gods and men and other stranger beings strive to gain control, and where two young lovers are thrust into the midst of the coming storm.I wrote Gol as a prequel to The Shattered Crown (now book three - Legends of Ansu.) It's a standalone novel, but also opens the doors on the rest of the books -- the events taking place 1000 years before the next one, The Shattered Crown. It's a large complex book, but the pages turn furious fast (or so my readers tell me!) Gol is darker than the other books in the series and focuses on the ambitions and folly of its rulers, and the crafty games played by their gods. I had a great time writing this though it was a challenge as there were so many threads to weave together. I do hope you enjoy it!

From the Back Cover When I came across this book I had no interest in the fantasy genre, but was inspired by the complexity of the world J.W Webb created. It is timeless and in my opinion a very clever piece of writing... a complexity of characters who are both so real and surreal in a world that is closer to our own than we would admit; a future classic! I wait with impatience for the next book. Good stuff-- Marie Mckeown.
